Matsuzaka to Start for Portland on Saturday

26 Apr

Daisuke Matsuzaka will make a rehab start for the Sea Dogs this Saturday at Hadlock Field versus the Reading Phillies. It will be the second time that he has made a rehab start for Portland, the last coming in 2009. In that game Matsuzaka got lit up in Manchester by the Fisher Cats, throwing 2 innings, allowing 4 hits, 3 walks, a home run and 5 earned runs.

Now on the mend from Tommy John surgery that cut his 2011 campaign short, Dice-K will be making his second start of the season when he suits up for the Sea Dogs. On Monday he started for Single-A Salem and allowed 6 hits, 0 walks, 2 home runs and 3 earned runs.

The 31-year-old righty is now in his sixth season with the Red Sox, the last three of which have been plagued by injuries. He made only 8 appearances last season (7 starts) and is in the final year of a $52 million dollar contract. His best season came in 2008 when he went 18-3 with a 2.90 ERA.

There has been no timetable set for his Portland stay. His pitch count should be around 65-75 on Saturday after throwing 57 in Salem.

As of this morning there were approximately 1000 tickets remaining for Saturday’s game according to Kevin Thomas of the Portland Press Herald, and they are going quick (Thomas also points out that Andy Pettitte may make a rehab start with Trenton in Portland on Monday…we’ll keep an eye on that). Hadlock Field prices range from $4 – $9, and yes, you can afford that!
