AAA
Pawtucket – 4
Buffalo – 7
WP: Drabek (1-0)
LP: Kehrt (0-1)
HR: PAW – Holt (1)
HIGHLIGHTS: Brock Holt (4-for-5, double, home run, RBI, 3 runs, stolen base) led off the game with a home run, but the Bisons scored twice in the bottom of the first and three more times in the second to gain the upper hand. Holt has 13 hits in seven games and is now batting .481…Garin Cecchini went 2-for-4 to raise his average to .345. He has hit safely in all but one of his eight games played…Brayan Villareal pitched a scoreless eighth inning in relief. He has yet to yield a run in three appearances this season.

AA
New Britain – 2
Portland – 11
WP: Pena (1-0)
LP: Rogers (0-2)
HR: NB – Vargas (2)
HIGHLIGHTS: Make it two straight at the friendly confines of Hadlock Field for the Sea Dogs, who put up five runs in the first to grab a hold of this game early. Stefan Welch led the offensive brigade with a 2-for-4, 5 RBI performance. Welch drove in two with a first inning single and three more with a seventh inning double…Mickey Pena went five innings for his first win of the season, and second in a Sea Dogs uniform. He allowed one run on five hits and struck out three…Portland had 14 hits on the night, Deven Marrero went 3-for-5 and four other batters collected two hits. Blake Swihart went 1-for-4 with an RBI…New Britain’s Kennys Vargas, who had two doubles on Thursday night, hit a ninth inning home run off Miguel Celestino.

Salem – 5
WP: Stafford (1-0)
LP: Mercedes (1-1)
S: Kela (2)
HR: MB – Gallo (3)

For the Sox, it’s their second straight defeat after a 6-0 start…All seven of Salem’s hits came from the bottom half of their order. Matt Gedman, Ryan Dent and Kevin Heller had two hits apiece. Heller had a double and triple.

He has not walked a batter in 12 innings…Joe Gunkel worked three perfect innings in relief, striking out seven for his second save of the season…Kevin Mager led the 17-hit offense. 20 Weeks

12 Apr

AuglieraWeek 1Mike Augliera, Portland Sea Dogs

The following was a feature that I was just about to spring on the On Deck blog, but when it was taken down I wasn’t sure if would be worthwhile out here. However, I did have a couple of willing participants, and I ran into one of them on Thursday night up in Portland, so we’re going to roll with it.

20 Weeks (the approximate length of a minor league season) is going to hopefully be a regular feature where we check in with a couple of select players to see how life truly is in the minor leagues. Our first participant is Mike Augliera, a right-handed pitcher from New Jersey who is making his debut in Double-A this season. This idea of the blog is to get a feel for things from the player’s perspective and words, so without further ago, here are some of Augliera’s thoughts on his first couple of weeks in Double-A ball…

On first Double-A start
“It was definitely exciting. Maybe a little too exciting the first couple of innings. I got hit around a little bit, I left some pitches up, and mechanical things that were definitely a cause of being excited. I threw in front of some friends and family from back home (note: Mike started the Sea Dogs fourth game of the season in Reading, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Old Bridge, New Jersey, about two hours away). It was definitely a fun experience and one I’ve been waiting for a long time. I hope this isn’t the last stop of my career.”

On next Double-A start
“I’m always going to be excited, but hopefully I’m going to be able to calm down a little bit more early in the game. I’m looking forward to every start. Today (Thursday) was definitely a cold one. It’s never fun doing anything out in the weather like this. It will be nice pitching a day game (on Saturday), having some sun, hopefully. I’ve done it before being from the Northeast and all.”

Reaching the next level
“I feel professional, I guess. Every level you go up, you learn something new, how to carry yourself. The hitters get better and better, so you learn more about yourself as a pitcher. Hopefully I keep growing as a pitcher, as a person. I’ve only been here for a week or so, but I’ve definitely picked up some things that guys do. I look forward to the rest of the year.”

Augliera was a the Red Sox fifth round draft pick out of Binghamton in 2012. He started his pro career that year in Lowell and pitched all of 2013 in Advanced-A Salem.

In Mike’s first start, last Sunday against the Fightin’ Phils, he allowed four runs, all of which came off a second inning grand slam from Carlos Alonso. In the other five innings he pitched, he allowed just four hits and struck out two.

Augliera pitches on Saturday afternoon for the Sea Dogs as they host the New Britain Rock Cats at Hadlock Field, with Mike’s first pitch schedule around 1:00 p.m.
